Internet from ARPA to Skype

From the 1950s to skype… that’s a quick trip. Wow!

So I make a few calls and chat via Skype, many people do, although I still use a fixed or mobile phone for most calls.

Today, I was reading a book called Nerds 2.0.1, based on the PBS show. I was reading about Larry Roberts engineering of ARPAnet, the predecessor of the internet.

And reading about a discussion between Roberts and Bob Taylor on the creation of the ARPAnet, and thus the internet. And it struck me.

The world has gone from no global network, to an academic network, to a world wide web, and finally to a situation of web 2.0 applications. Like skype.

It’s a long way from a 1962 dinner table meeting, to using skype to make calls all over the world. And this blog. And websites. And media, and web 2.0. It’s all changed.

And all in 46 years.

Fascinating.
